European Commission launches tender for studies on AI and E-Health
The call for tender specifically relates firstly to a study on citizens’ access to their electronic health records (EHR) in the EU Member States and secondly to a study on the development, adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the health and care sector in the EU.
Lot I: Interoperability of Electronic Health Records
The study seeks to survey and analyse progress on the digital transformation of the health and care in the EU, particularly with regard to citizens’ access to their Electronic health records (EHR). It will provide an overview of the current situation in EU Member States with regard to the development of interoperable EHR systems and enabling technological solutions such as electronic identification, distributed ledger and cybersecurity.
The European Commission expects that results of the study will support and inform its ongoing work with the EU Member States on the interoperability of EHR systems, in particular with regard to the development of the European EHR exchange format.
Lot II: Artificial Intelligence for Health and Care
The study aims to survey and analyse progress on the adoption of Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for the benefit of patients and health and care systems in the EU. It will provide an overview of the current situation with regard to the development, adoption and use of AI technologies and applications in the health and care sector in the EU Member States.
It is interesting to note that the launch of a tender for a study on AI for Health and Care, is in line with the Commission’s intent to bring about the digital transformation of health and care across Member States. The results of the study are expected support and inform the Commission policy initiatives aiming to leverage AI and big data for digitally transforming and improving health and care.
- Applicants are free to apply for one or both lots with the maximum amount allocated to the studies being EUR 300,000 for Lot I and EUR 200,000 for Lot II.
- The deadline for reception of tenders is set for 23 September 2019 at 15:00.
- As of today, no information is available as to when the study is expected to be completed, but it will certainly provide an interesting insight on e-health and artificial intelligence adoption in the EU.
