The Priorities of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union of 2021
On 1 and 2 December, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa presented to the EU institutions the Priorities of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union of 2021.These priorities will shape the work of the Council of the EU directly for the next 6 months, and indirectly by setting up the stage for coming presidencies.
The Presidency will aim at strengthening Europe’s resilience and people's confidence in the European social model by promoting a Union based on the common values of solidarity, convergence and cohesion. The European Pillar of Social Rights is highly emphasised and the presidency will aim to tackle the consequences of the pandemic in this dimension as a "way to strengthen Europe’s ability to keep pace with climate, digital, and demographic changes".
Among the five priorities presented by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, two are of relevance for the Avicenna Alliance as they express ambitions regarding health, innovations and funding opportunities:
- Resilient Europe:
Ensure the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and establish sustainable growth;
- Digital Europe:
Prioritise the acceleration of the digital transition as a driver of economic recovery and promote European leadership in innovation and in the digital economy.
The Avicenna Alliance is happy to see that digital solutions and technology are at the heart of the agenda of the next presidency of the Council. Acknowledging that new technologies have proved to be irreplaceable during the COVID-19 crisis, digital is now clearly perceived as a crucial means to propel the EU recovery and as such, the sector will benefit from significant funding proposed by the Commission, including Horizon Europe.
The Portuguese Presidency will start from 1 January 2021 until 30 June 2021.
