EU invests €35 million to develop AI solutions for cancer prevention, diagnostics and treatment

On 9 July, the European Commission has launched a call for proposal with €35 million available aimed to support the development of analysis of health images for cancer diagnostics based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Key points

  • It is described that the analysis of health images is one of the most promising fields for applying AI in healthcare as it is able to improve prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.
  • The scope of this action should contribute to testing and developing AI tools and analytics focused on the prevention, prediction and treatment of the most common forms of cancer, while providing solutions to share health images across Europe.
  • Commenting on the call for proposals, Vytenis Andriukaitis, the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, stated that working across silos will boost the EU’s capacity to help patients by sharing and interpreting technological advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment prediction across the EU. Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, also called for the establishment of a framework that balances individual concerns and health system constraints, while unleashing innovation in healthcare for the benefit of all Europeans.
  • Commissioner Gabriel will discuss the roadmap set out in the Communication on the digital transformation of health and care, adopted in April 2018, as well as other key topics, such as the next steps on the recently adopted Recommendation on the interoperability of electronic health records systems, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. She will also highlight the importance of taking forward the exchange of health data across borders and addressing the relevant privacy and data protection aspects.

Analysis

Here the Commission aims to accelerate the use of digital solutions in public health and healthcare in Europe focusing on three areas: secured access and cross-border sharing of data, improve data to advance research, and improve digital tools for citizen empowerment and person-centered care.
